Spain in a critical situation of energy dependency. Analysts see a large weight of nuclear and hydraulic energy necessary.

The experts meeting at La Granda agree that Spain has found itself in a critical situation in terms of energetical material, and some of them, such as the engineers Juan Avilés and María Teresa Estevan, see a large weight of nuclear and hydraulic energy necessary in the energy mix in Spain.

Avilés Trigueros highlights that “the policy of planning has determined that a nation that finds itself in a critical situation in terms of energy dependency at all levels and with an elevated energy and environmental cost, cannot develop economically or industrially.” Also, an economist, he considers that “in the strategic plan, the basic objective for Spain should be to overcome the renewable hypertrophy and increase productivity via innovation and mediating the reduction of energy costs.” For him, the specialist referred to three questions to work on: “Give weight in the energy mix to nuclear energies, regulate fossils, and expand hydraulic capacity.”

Juan Avilés said that “The energy union is equally important as the monetary and fiscal.” And he adds “With what will we substitute the end of nuclear? Europe does not have any other possible alternative other than the construction of nuclear reactors to substitute those that are found active today.” For the engineer and economist, “the basis of renewables is a political and stupid question. Only from a political point of view can the global support for alternative renewable energies be understood given that they currently have strong economic, technical and environmental deficits,” he argues.
